Lisa Ruble Workshop

Hello, Modern Quilters! We are so excited to have our member Lisa Ruble teach us how to make her awesome ZuZu Squares quilt! We will be meeting at the Oshtemo Library Saturday, 27 April, at 10:00am.  Please reserve your spot ($10 deposit) for the workshop (on the left-hand side).   Space is limited!  Those attending will need to buy the pattern from Lisa’s shop. You should have received an email with info on fabric requirements.  If not let us know and we can get it to you.  

Also, Christine McElhone will be teaching us how to crochet with fabric strips in June! If you want to plan ahead, strips should be 1.5" wide.  The length can vary, but 10" or more works best.  There is no need to sew the strips together -- simply cut a slit approximately 1/2" long VERTICALLY at both ends of the strips (about a 1/2" from the ends) and Christine will show us how to join them together.  You will also need a P or Q crochet hook.  More details to come later.

Registration for the Laura Heine workshop will open in May.  We will let you know the date and time so we all have equal access to signup.

Don't forget your block for the swap.  Reminder we are at Oshtemo library and not downtown for this meeting.

April Online Activity

It's been a minute! We haven't done a block lottery for several months, and it's time to get back on track!

This month we will follow the free tutorial from AQS, "Block 2019: Snail Trail"

Please use bright modern prints or solids for the darker sections (denoted by blue, aqua and coral in the tutorial) and white or low volume prints for the light sections (gray in the tutorial)

Use either method (pieced or paper pieced). Trim your block to 12 1/2" x 12 1/2" but do not add batting or backing for the quilt-as-you-go option.

March 2019 Social Meeting Recap

We had a wonderful social meeting meeting today.  Thank you so much to Shannon for hosting us in her beautiful new home--aka castle!  She gave us the tour and let us all play on her new longarm, which was fun.  Shannon also prepared a really nice spread for us all, which was amazing of her!

A table runner "whipped up" from a free pattern recently published by Gudrun Erla.  I'm sorry I didn't catch the title of it, so I can't link to it.  Maybe someone can leave information in the comments.

One of our members had lost her sewing mo-jo.  She decided to get it back by sewing together about 1,200 squares, each of which was 1.5"!!!  Wow!  What an amazing feat!  She said she's starting to get that sewing mo-jo back!

A quilt made from a collection of Elizabeth Hartman's blocks.  Our member's son requested each of these blocks on his quilt for a birthday present.  Don't you love the "land and sea" separation?!

As a guild, we made a quilt from blocks members contributed.  This is the converging corners block, a free tutorial from Film in The Fridge.  Our other local guild, Log Cabin Quilters, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.  Our modern guild was asked to give a presentation on modern log cabin blocks.  One member will give that talk.  The guild made this quilt as one example of such, with blocks contributed by guild members.  We will donate it to the Seita Scholars program, a program on Western Michigan University's campus to help college students who have aged out of the foster care system.  We provide them with quilts for their dorm room beds, because they often show up to campus with all the usual dorm room accoutrements that most college kids have their parents purchase for them.

How much do you love this stripey back and binding!  I swoon!

This quilt is called Supernova and is made from a free tutorial by Freshly Pieced.  Our member made it with blocks from a swap with a friend.  All with Kaffe Fassett fabrics.

Some of us have been working through Angela Walters' Free Motion Quilt Along.  (If you are interested, go to Angela Walters' YouTube channel and search for Free Motion Quilt Along Challenge.  You'll find lots of good stuff there.)  All this was done on a domestic machine.

It looks so awesome!  So much learning happening here!

Love seeing all this quilty goodness!

One of our members was going to visit a new granddaughter and wanted some handwork to do.  So, she took all these circles to applique and made this quilt!  We all loved the different sizes of circles and how they weren't all centered.  So fun!

She had so much fun with that circle quilt, she made another.  How about this wonderful ISpy quilt?!  And all those polka dot sashing strips!! Love!

This is a quilt pattern from Tula Pink, from one of her blocks.  The blocks came from a bee our member took part in with friends.

Another beautiful finish.  We were told our member started this quilt at a retreat and finished it in the same day!!!  Whoa.

Our member really liked this quilt block.  Instead of making it small, she enlarged it quite a bit and made this fun, one-block quilt!

Another great finish with batiks from stash.  Seems like a lot of folks in our group are trying hard to use up their stash a bit.
