July Meeting this Saturday

Hi,

Our next meeting is this Saturday July 26, 2014.  We will meet at Quilts Plus (directions) from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.
Teri Springer one of our members will be giving an intro to fabric dyeing.  We will also have the opportunity to sign up for some hands on at her studio.  Find out a little bit about Teri here.

Don't forget to post your June (link here) on line activity blocks and bring them to the meeting for a chance to win.  There has been a number of blocks posted on facebook that look fabulous

We will also be swapping fat quarters of text fabric get the details here.  I am excited and can't wait to see what everyone brings.

We will also be doing show and tell.  I always look forward to this part of the meeting.

See you on Saturday if we don't melt today :).

Text fabric swap details!

Hi all,
We'd talked at the May meeting about doing a text fabric swap in July, and the date is fast approaching!

Here are the details:

  • If you want to participate, bring a fat quarter of text fabric to swap. (If you like, bring more than one and you'll take more than one home...it's up to you!)
  • At the meeting, anyone who brings a fat quarter (or more than one) to swap will take home a different fat quarter.
  • If you can't make the July meeting (July 26) send your fat quarter with a friend so you can still be part of the swap!
  • Text fabric is any fabric with words/numbers/writing on it. Here are some examples below.

(Note: I found all of these examples [and many more!] simply by googling "text fabric." You can also check out your favorite online quilt shops.)
A few shops to look at:

Now, to make things slightly more complicated, if you like, this can tie into our next online activity (for the September meeting). Our block will be the spider web block (find the tutorial here and see the block photo further down in this post). We will be asking you to use black on white/cream text fabric for the center "star" (the solid white portion) of the tutorial block.

Here's a peek at the block (color scheme of the pieced portion still to be determined--we'll let you know details at the July meeting/on the blog after the July meeting):
Photo and tutorial:

What does this mean?
  • You may wish to purchase more than a fat quarter of text fabric when you choose something for the swap.
  • Each spider web block uses a 12-1/2" square of text fabric. Ultimately, you'll have text fabric scraps left over from making the spider web block, but you will only be able to get ONE 12-1/2" square (for the block activity) out of a fat quarter.
  • If you choose a non white and black text fabric for the swap, that's fine--just make sure you also have a white and black text fabric option of your own to use for making your online activity block. (I say this because I haven't seen a lot of text fabrics around the area--you may end up going online to buy text fabric for the swap and/or activity, and this way you can plan ahead to purchase both at the same time.)
  • If you buy 1/2 yard of fabric, you can cut it into 1 fat quarter for the swap and still have fabric left to make one spider web block. If you buy 3/4 yard of fabric, you can cut your fat quarter for the swap and be able to make 2 spider web blocks (or just have leftover text fabric to play with!). *You can also the FQ you receive in the swap for your block if it is black on white.*
I tried to make this post uncomplicated, but I'm not totally sure I succeeded! If you have questions or need help finding fabric, please leave a message in the comments and I'll get in touch with you.
Thanks!
Lisa
p.s. If you have suggestions on where else online to shop specifically for text fabric, please leave web addresses in the comments below and/or on Facebook!
