June Program and Workshop: Amanda Jean Nyberg

Amanda Jean Nyberg from Crazy Mom Quilts will be doing a workshop at our June 23 2018 meeting.

She will be teaching techniques from her book, No Scrap Left Behind: 16 Quilt Projects That Celebrate Scraps of All Sizes.

Participants should purchase a copy of the book prior and bring it to the workshop.   Amanda Jean says "The class participants can pick any quilt from my book. It's fun to see what everyone chooses! It's good because each student has different kinds/shapes of scraps to use up." So bring a pile of scraps too. Different quilts in the book use different types of scraps. Supply List [PDF]

English Paper Piecing EPP

Hi,
Next meeting this Saturday March 22 at 10:30am.
Our leader Stephanie (aka the big kahuna) will be teaching us English paper piecing.  I can't wait.  EPP is a technique I have always wanted to learn.  According to  paperpieces " Even though the way paper pieces are produced has changed, the way EPP is done has not changed since its creation".  I bet GLMQG will have a modern twist.

Here are a few links for tutorials and inspiration.

Lights Camera Action

Hi,

Our next meeting should be really fun.

We have Vincent Soo from Vincent Soo & Co. coming to give a presentation on photography.
Vincent has been working with and consulting in the video/photography business for the last 33 years.  As sales manager with Norman Camera he retired in 2003 to focus on consulting with digital photography and video.  In addition to providing video services (duplication, editing, repair), he has also contracted out for troubleshooting, training, purchase and setting up of equipment and teaching forensic photography. He has an impressive client list.

You can see some of his work here.

We got some great feedback from our blog post and he told me he can address most of the issues.  Awesome!!

Disclaimer:  This is not Vince.
Please bring your camera(s).  If  you have examples of pictures that need a little help Vince has asked for a few examples.  Please feel free to post them to our flickr account.  Let me know in the comments and I will pass them along to Vince.

I happen to know that Vince is an avid skier.

Married to an avid seamstress ( I haven't got her hooked on quilting yet) and has a very cute daughter.

See you on February 22 at 10:30 at the Plainwell Library.  I have given the polar vortex instructions to stay away :).

Since this is a quilting blog I will leave you with this.

I think this quilt looks super fun and really would like the book.

 See you soon

How to Prevent Injuries and Keep on Quilting

Ed Orloff, PT, DPT, CSCS, Cert MDT

Ed graduated with a degree in Kinesiology and Biology. He earned his doctorate degree in Physical Therapy. He is certified in Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy through the McKenzie Institute International. He is working toward a diploma in Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy. As an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association, he works as the Federal Affairs Liaison to the state of Michigan advocating for patient rights in Lansing and Washington D.C.

Meet Ed:
He is a member of the Borgess Spine Physical Therapy Team
and a member of our local Trikats triathalon group.
I don't think he quilts but he can answer that question himself.
The woman beside the man is Julie Rogers our very own Kalamazoo County Commissioner 5th District.  Julie is also a physical therapist and rumor has it may also show up at our meeting. Not sure if she quilts either.
Ed is going to present a short program to help reduce the chance of ergonomic injuries due to quilting and sewing.
Looking forward to seeing everyone on Saturday.  Remember to bring your quilt blocks for a chance to win them all.

January 25 meeting

Hi,

Just a quick reminder that our next meeting is January 25.  We will meet at the Plainwell library at 10 am.  I have a physical therapist coming to talk to us about injury prevention while sewing and quilting.  I am looking forward to learning a few tips to prevent ergonomic problems that could prevent me from quilting .  Not being able to sew is really torture to me.

I will post more info about our guest later this week.
Looking forward to seeing you next Saturday.

Upcoming November Meeting and Sew In

Hi,

It is getting close to our next guild meeting so here's the info.

Our meeting will be held Saturday November 23 at http://www.berninakalamazoo.com/   from 10:00 to 12:00  at 4205 Portage Road Kalamazoo, MI 49001.  Our meeting is open to anyone who would like to come.

Our leader Stephanie will be doing a demo of the quick curve ruler designed by Jenny Pedigo. Jenny's blog is http://sewkindofwonderful.blogspot.com/.  She has a video tutorial if you want to get a head start on the demo.  Jenny has a number of great patterns that use the ruler.  Karen at Bernina has ordered the rulers and some patterns so they will be available.  I am really looking forward to the demo.

Jenny is also a long arm quilter and is quilting this one that Stephanie made using the quick curve ruler.
Urban Nine Patch

Upcoming Guild Meeting Sept 21

Hi,

I always get so excited when the guild meeting is near.  I hope to see everyone next Saturday the 21st at the Plainwell library.

Our very own Carolyn Zinn will be teaching us about paper piecing.  In order to get to know a little more about Carolyn I asked her a few questions.

1.  When did you begin quilting?

I began quilting in 1979. My first project was a sampler of classic blocks that I hung on my college dorm room wall. I made it without a pattern, out of scrap fabric (I have been sewing since 1968!). I loved the geometry, the patterns within the patterns, and the puzzle of it all.

2.  Why do you quilt?

These days I quilt to create functional, tactile art.  My walls are covered with art quilts! I don't make bed covers for myself anymore, but I love to make usable quilts as gifts.

3.  What new technique are you hoping to learn this year?

As a member of the Art Quilt small group of the Log Cabin Quilters, I am awestruck and inspired by the work of my fellow art quilters.  I want to learn everything there is to know about surface design and mixed-media techniques.

4.  Why modern quilting?

I like the bold colors and the idea of interpreting traditional blocks in fun new ways.

5..  What is your favorite sewing tool?

My rotary cutter wins out for sheer usefulness, but my prized possession is my grandmother's 1936 Singer Featherweight.

Wow.  I am jealous.  I would like to see the how the stiches come out on the Featherweight.

Now what we have all been waiting for drum roll please . . . . . . . . .

6   Can you give us a sneak peek of the paper piecing project?

We will be updating the paper-pieced kaleidoscope pattern featured on the cover of Paper Piecing with Alex Anderson 12 years ago. We will make it modern simply by swapping out the fabric choices. It's a fun skill to learn and easier to learn by seeing it demonstrated. I will bring enough paper pattern pieces for everyone to take home and make a few blocks for the October activity.  (I've enlarged the block size by 50% so it will be easier and we'll get more mileage out of the blocks toward a finished quilt.) The real magic of this pattern is when the blocks are combined to form the illusion of overlapping circles in shadow and light.

I know I can hardy wait until the 21st.

I will be back with another post in a few days as this is my month to introduce myself to the rest of the members.  I did finish my herringbone challenge block and I must say it was hairy and gave me a hard time.  It took me 4 tries to get the hang of it.  Perhaps I will have a giveaway at the meeting using my "mistakes".  You know what they say about lemons.

See you all soon.

Pam
