Hand Applique with Lynn Carson Harris

Hello, Friends!

Our next formal meeting will be on October 26, 2019 at 9:30 am.  We will have a short business meeting, followed by a trunk show with Lynn Carson Harris.  Lynn hails from Chelsea, MI and creates beautiful quilts.  All are welcome even if you are not coming to the workshop.

Workshop noon-4pm
After her trunk show, we will take a half hour break for lunch. Bring your lunch or pop out to purchase something nearby. Beginning at noon, Lynn will be teaching us about hand appliqué (registration required)!  It's going to be tons of fun!  If you'd like to learn more about Lynn and her work, please visit her website.

From Lynne's website:

Lynn’s needle turn applique technique makes it easy to achieve perfect applique circles and smooth curves. Points and corners are not a problem. Choose one of Lynn’s Fleur-de-lis patterns that are designed to teach you all of the skills needed to applique any other shape or design. You will learn the techniques needed to master applique on inside curves, outside curves, inside corners, and outside corners. The applique piece can later be made into a pillow top or small wall hanging, or used as the center of a medallion quilt.

Supplies

Here are the supplies you will need to bring to the meeting if you'd like to participate in the workshop:

  • Two fat quarters--one for the background and one for the applique design
  • Paper scissors
  • Small, sharp fabric scissors
  • Pins
  • Needles (Lynn uses Roxanne #10 Sharps)
  • Thimble
  • Good cotton sewing thread (Lynn likes Aurifil 50wt)
  • Pencil and paper

Lynn will provide :
  • Freezer paper squares
  • Patterns for tracing designs

Register

Sign ups are available now if you'd like to sign up for the workshop.  We hope to see you there!  Please join us!

5) Bring your completed blocks to the August 24 meeting for a chance to win them all! (lottery rules here)

My Dog Gone Cute Block

Here are some of my process shots. I found it fun and easy. There is a little bit of waste with her technique but it was so worth it in saved time! (Sorry about the odd coloring of the photos - I had to adjust the exposure)
All the pieces cut out. No triangles!

June Meeting -- Crocheting with fabric strips

For our June 22nd meeting, Christine McElhone will be teaching us how to crochet with fabric strips.  If you want to plan ahead, strips should be about 1.5" or 1" wide.  The length can vary, but 10" or more works best.  There is no need to sew the strips together -- simply cut a slit approximately 1/2" long VERTICALLY at both ends of the strips (about a 1/2" from the ends) and Christine will show us how to join them together or you can watch this helpful video: https://youtu.be/HvBSttaKgns.   You will also need a P or Q crochet hook.

We will be in the Van Deusen Room at the Kalamazoo Library downtown at 9:30.  Hope to see you there!

April 2019 Meeting with Lisa Ruble

Hello, Modern Quilters! At long last, the highlights from our April meeting are here! Sorry for the delay!
We had a very productive meeting.  We discussed the financial future of the guild and working on ways to continue the amazing programming (thanks, Pam!) that we have been enjoying.  Some ways may include pricing changes for the future retreats, changes in membership dues, and donations for programming.  We also discussed some great ideas for programs and projects for next year, such as another Make and Take workshop (like the Sew Together bag we did last year), Saturday Sew-ins, and Block of the Month sew-alongs! Stay tuned!

If you were not able to get your Snails Trail block done, we're extending this block lottery until the next meeting.  greatlakesmodernquiltguild.blogspot.com/2019/04/april-online-activity.html

Our next social meeting is Wednesday, 22 May at Mary's house.  For our June meeting, Christine McElhone will be teaching us how to crochet with fabric strips.  If you want to plan ahead, strips should be 1.5" wide.  The length can vary, but 10" or more works best.  There is no need to sew the strips together -- simply cut a slit approximately 1/2" long VERTICALLY at both ends of the strips (about a 1/2" from the ends) and Christine will show us how to join them together.  There are also Youtube videos that may help. You will also need a P or Q crochet hook.  More details to come later.

An email regarding the details for the Laura Heine mini quilt workshop in August will be coming soon. Sign-ups for the workshop will open 24 June.

We were so excited to have our guild member Lisa visit from Florida to teach us how to make her awesome ZuZu Squares quilt. Check out her Etsy site!
