"Plaidish" Block Lottery

 For the April 26 meeting (location TBD), we will have a block lottery like we used to! 

The pattern is "Plaidish" by Kitchen Table Quilting (free PDF download). 

Rules:

• Make one block A, one block B, and one block C
  
  
• Follow the light/mid/dark value instructions for each block pattern
  
  
• Use bright, modern prints especially for the mid-values. Use up scraps!
  
  
• Do not sew the three blocks together 
  
  
• For each set of three blocks that you bring/send to the meeting, you will have one chance at winning the lottery and taking home everyone's blocks!

September and October will be the months for our quilted coat sew-along!

 If you are interested in participating, here is some information to help you prepare. 

What to Expect

Now: you can be making your choices about sewing pattern and fabric layout (the quilt)

Hovea Coat

    How to choose a sewing pattern:

• The coat style should be simple. Drop sleeves and collarless styles work best.
• See this pinterest board for several appropriate options.
• OR use one of two patterns chosen by Carrie and Carolyn for ease and simplicity so you get first-hand tips from us!
• Carrie made the Hovea Coat by Megan Nielson (view D)
• Carolyn is making the Noh Coat by Bonnie Cashin
• Sizing: refer to the bust, waist and hip measurements on the pattern, NOT the size number.  You might have to size up if you select a pattern that was not originally drafted to be used with bulky/quilted fabric.

 How to choose the quilt/fabric:

• You can start with an already-made quilt that you will cut up into pattern pieces.  Make sure you consult the yardage requirements on the pattern to be sure the quilt is big enough to accommodate the pattern.
• You can start from scratch. With this option, you create small quilt sandwiches that are just bigger than each pattern piece like Bethany shows here. Allow for shrinkage, as you will need to prewash your sections before cutting into them.
• Pay attention to the quilt backing, which will serve as the coat lining, and the binding, especially if you want the coat to be reversible! 
• Lots of inspiration on the pinterest board.

September 28: Zoom meeting: pre-assembly Q&A  

• This will be an opportunity to ask questions or share experiences about any part of your quilt coat journey. What pattern did you choose? Do you still need help choosing? Are you cutting up an existing quilt? How did you decide to layout your design? Need any help deciding? What else do we need to think about before the sew-in?
• If comfortable, start cutting your pattern sections at home before the October workshop.

October 29: In-person workshop: (cutting), assembling and binding

• At this workshop (location TBD), bring your supplies and machines.
• Doesn't matter how far along (or behind!) your project is .
• Since we won't all be making the same pattern, there will not be any step-by-step instruction at the workshop. However, there may be demonstrations on techniques required for various common steps. 
• Carrie and Carolyn (and other members) will be there to coach anyone who wants help.

Fabric Bowls Workshop

Date: Saturday, June 22, 2024

Location: Ransom District Library, Plainwell MI

In this hands-on workshop, Ann Berger will teach us how to make these gorgeous one-of-a-kind fabric bowls!

Supplies

• Canvas foundation fabric and fusible web will be provided for a $15 fee, payable at the workshop. 
• A list of other required supplies will be sent to all GLMQG members* via email.

2024 Dues

 Dues have been set at $30 for this year and can be paid online or at the April in-person meeting.

This amount is a 50% reduction over last year. It reflects the fact that we are not bringing in any national speakers this year. 

Even so, we have some fun and interesting ideas for our upcoming in-person meetings, including sew-ins, fabric bowl making, and a wearable quilt project! More information coming soon!

Holiday Party Recap

Tuesday night was our annual GLMQG Holiday Party at University Roadhouse. We had our favorite back room again (Thanks Stephanie and Pam for setting that up and confirming!). It was so nice to see everyone, and fun to see the festive sweaters several ladies wore! And...it didn't snow this year to make the driving tough.

2023 Holiday Party Information

Hi Everyone,

We will be hosting our holiday party on Tuesday, December 5 at 6:00 pm at the University Roadhouse in Kalamazoo.  Please mark you calendars!  Hope you can come.  

Food and drinks will be available "dutch treat" from the menu. 

We will also have a swap, if you'd like to participate.  It is not at all required that you participate in the swap if you attend the holiday party.  Please come, even if you don't want to participate in the swap.  Lots of people do that, so it's totally fine!

For our swap this year, please make an ornament to exchange.  If you bring one, you'll go home with one.  If not, just come for the fun and fellowship.

Here are the parameters:  

• Make an ornament that could either hang on a tree or an ornament hanger.  
• Try to make it "modern" in aesthetic -- consider colors, design, materials.  
• Make something that will make your friend feel special. 
• Bring your ornament wrapped in a box or in a gift bag.  
• We will assign numbers to each gift brought and anonymously swap.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the event.  We can't wait to see what you all come up with for your ornaments!

October 2023 Social Meeting Recap

 On Saturday, October 28, 2024, we held our social meeting and showed progress on everyone's mystery block-of-the-month project with the designer, Shelly Pagliai of Prairie Moon Quilts.

We held the meeting virtually, and that was a lot of fun.  I neglected to take screenshots when Shelly showed her versions of the quilt, which was a shame!  But here are some of the versions our members shared.  (If I missed one, please forgive me.  I tried to remember to snap a screenshot each time!) Check out all these amazing iterations!  Some are still working on their blocks (and some--ahem, like me--haven't started yet!)
