June 2023 Meeting: Learn to paper piece a Judy Niemeyer pattern with Jodie Madison

 Hello Modern Quilters!

We have a really fun meeting planned for June! We are very happy to welcome Jodie Madison, a Judy Niemeyer certified instructor from Wisconsin, to Kalamazoo.  Jodie will teach us how to prepare for and make a Judy Niemeyerquilt  pattern!  I hope you are as excited as we are!

We will be making the Goodnight Star quilt pattern.

How cool is this?!  If you would like to see this quilt in real life, please come to our social meeting this Saturday, May 20, 2023 at 10:30 am.  We will be meeting at Pam's house.  Jodie was kind enough to send the quilt to Pam so you could all see it in real life. (The social meeting will be hybrid if you can't make it in person.)  The quilting thread is hot pink!

Here are details you need for our June meeting to participate in the workshop:

Date:  June 24, 2023

Time: Class starts at 10:30 am.  (Doors open at the library at 10:00 if you wish to come in and set up early.)

Location:  Oshtemo Branch of the Kalamazoo Public Library

Format:  In person--this meeting will be held in person only.

Pattern:  You must purchase the pattern.  You can either do so from the link above or you can purchase directly from Jodie for an $8 discount (cost only $30 if purchased from her).

Reserve your seat:  If you are coming to the workshop, please reserve your seat here When you reserve your seat, you can indicate if you want to purchase a pattern the day of the workshop or if you already have one (or have purchased ahead of time).  Jodie will bring your pattern, and you can pay at the workshop, if you choose you want to purchase a pattern.

Preparation and Class Supplies:  Check your email.  You should have received a PDF with all the class supplies on it.  The only prep work that needs to be done is to cut your fabrics into 2.5" strips.  Please refer to the PDF for those instructions.  No other pre-class prep is required.

Concerned about this being a big quilt?  Consider just doing the center four blocks and making a pillow or table topper.  Consider making a table runner with some partial stars.  These could all be really cool options!

Finally, Jodie will be doing a trunk show of her quilts over the lunch hour.  So, bring your lunch and watch her trunk show while eating!  If you aren't coming for the workshop but want to see the trunk show, come on over around noon.  We'd love to see you.

Hope to see you all at the meeting.  This should be a really fun workshop.  I've waited years to learn from a Judy Niemeyer instructor, and we can't wait for Jodie to teach us.

See you soon!

Workshop Photo Dump!

In April, we had a fabulous workshop on free motion quilting lead by Christina Cameli. Here are some of the photos we took that day.

Christina starts with ground rules like "be nice to yourself!"

Christina used a white board to free-motion sketch various designs

A Christina original -- look at that quilting!

Christina offered helpful quilting advice for members' quilts

Diane shared two quilts she made using Christina's wedge method.

Jane used the wedges on this table-topper

Show and tell!

More about Shelly:

Pagliai is an Italian name, and is pronounced like “Polly Eye”.

She is a designer from Wien, Missouri. She has designed quilts and block-of-the-month patterns for various shops and is a talented machine quilter who has had her work shown all over the country. The Kansas City Star was fortunate to have her as the designer for its 2015 block-of-the-month feature, "Hazel’s Diary."

Shelly Pagliai is a quilt pattern designer, author, blogger, coffee lover, ranch wife, goat keeper, cat herder, and professional machine quilter. A quilter since the age of 12, she started her pattern company in 1999, while working her day job as a computer technician. She started blogging in 2009, and added a longarm machine to her business that same year. She quickly became so busy with customer quilts that she quit her day job in 2010 to begin designing and quilting full time.

Shelly’s work has been featured in numerous quilting magazines, museum exhibits, and books, and has appeared in many major quilt shows, where she has received numerous awards. She is the author of A Simple Life: Quilts Inspired by the ’50s, with C&T Publishing.

Shelly quilts on a Nolting Pro Series 24 named Ivy in the upstairs of the 1921 farmhouse she shares with her Cowboy at Prairie Moon Ranch in Missouri. Check out their antics at prairiemoonquilts.com.
