May Social Meeting

23 May Social Meeting
Pam's House

What a beautiful setting for a gathering of modern quilters!  We met at Pam's beautiful home on the lake for delicious snacks and cold drinks.  We watched some kids play in the water and a few people on paddleboards -- we even saw a hot air balloon!  It was a lovely evening.  Thank you, Pam, for graciously hosting.  Here are some pictures from the meeting:

The view was amazing!

We exchanged the quilts for the travelling quilt challenge. So far, there are 7 people participating.  These are the quilts from the first round of exchanges (the starting block and the first "addition" from a fellow quilter).
Leslie added some flying geese to Stephanie's tattoo block.
Lynne added a HST border around Leslie's beautiful block.
Caroline added a cursive "imagine" to Lynne's "Create" block.

Pat added a piano key border and stars to Caroline's improv star block.
Lisa added a purple border and a curved rectangle border to Jill's curved flying geese block.
Jill added a book block (Angela Pingel) to Pat's paper-pieced star block.
Stephanie added a wonderful "Moxie" tattoo block and a paper-pieced star block to Lisa's star block!

You can see what amazing work is being done.  The quilts have traveled to the next stop! I can't wait to see the finished products!

Show and tell time!
Lynne showed off the house blocks she has made for an online quilt-along. Every block has a unique door -- it was fun looking through them!
Lynne also shared her progress on a signature quilt she is making for a special aunt on her 90th birthday!
Pam shared a quilt she created with her exchange student for a community service project. It was her exchange student's first time sewing!  She did a great job -- she had a great teacher!

We hope to see you all next month for the workshop!

Online Activity for June 2018

This month we are going to use a tutorial published by our upcoming speaker, Amanda Jean Nyberg.
It's a pint sized scrappy churn dash block that Amanda has published on her blog, Crazy Mom Quilts. It's only 4 1/2 inches! So fun to make!

Please use fun bright scraps and light grey for the background.

Here's my messy attempt!

Bring/send your blocks to the June meeting for a chance to win them all. Lottery rules here.

June Program and Workshop: Amanda Jean Nyberg

Amanda Jean Nyberg from Crazy Mom Quilts will be doing a workshop at our June 23 2018 meeting.

She will be teaching techniques from her book, No Scrap Left Behind: 16 Quilt Projects That Celebrate Scraps of All Sizes.

Participants should purchase a copy of the book prior and bring it to the workshop.   Amanda Jean says "The class participants can pick any quilt from my book. It's fun to see what everyone chooses! It's good because each student has different kinds/shapes of scraps to use up." So bring a pile of scraps too. Different quilts in the book use different types of scraps. Supply List [PDF]

We will be meeting at the Kalamazoo library downtown (315 Rose St) in the Van Deusen room. Directions and parking info here.  Remember you don't need to feed the meters on weekends.

We have the room from 9-4:30. Please bring your lunch and snacks. The workshop will be the full day, with a trunk show during the lunch break.

Space in the workshop is limited! THE WORKSHOP IS FULL! WE ARE TAKING REFUNDABLE WAITLIST RESERVATIONS. Priority will be given to GLMQG members until June 16th. To reserve your spot, please submit a refundable deposit of $10 below.
